Internet at sea: what remote workers actually get in 2026

Every way a yacht gets online — coastal 4G/5G, marina Wi-Fi, Starlink — what each one really delivers, and how to plan a working week around the gaps.

Every remote worker asks the same question before their first week on a boat, and it is the right question: what is the internet actually like? The honest answer is that it is good — better than most people expect — but it is good in a different shape than home internet. It is not one connection that always works; it is three connections, each with a different failure mode, and a week that is planned around them.

The three ways a yacht gets online

The pattern that falls out of that table is the one every working boat converges on: a local SIM as the primary connection near shore, Starlink as the thing that removes the map from the equation, and marina Wi-Fi as a bonus you never rely on.

Coastal 4G/5G: the quiet workhorse

This surprises people. Along the Turkish and Croatian coasts, cellular coverage over water is genuinely good — the towers are on hills above coastal towns, and water has nothing in it to block a signal. A typical speedtest at anchor in Göcek marina is around 47 Mbps down and 23 up. That is faster than a lot of European home broadband, with lower jitter than satellite.

What you need is a local SIM, not roaming. A Turkish, Greek, or Croatian prepaid data plan costs €15–30 for 50–100 GB and takes twenty minutes to buy on arrival. Run it in a MiFi router rather than a phone if more than one person depends on it: a dedicated hotspot with an external antenna holds a marginal signal that a phone in your pocket drops.

Where it fails is predictable: long crossings out of tower range, the far side of an uninhabited island, and deep bays where the headland sits between you and the shore. On a coastal route that is a handful of hours a week, not a daily problem.

Marina Wi-Fi: take it, do not trust it

Every marina advertises Wi-Fi. Most deliver a single access point covering a pontoon of forty boats, which is fine at 09:00 and hopeless at 21:00 when everyone is streaming. Use it for backups, OS updates, and large downloads you do not care about — the things you would rather not spend cellular data on. Do not schedule a client call on it.

Starlink is the only option on the list that works genuinely offshore, and it is the reason working weeks in places like the Aegean island chains or Thailand became practical at all. At anchor it gives 100–250 Mbps down with 30–60 ms latency. The trade-offs are a 1–5 second dropout when the dish re-acquires a satellite, and 40–75 W of continuous power draw that competes with the fridge for your battery bank. The rule that matters more than the hardware: redundancy

No single connection at sea is reliable enough to be your only one. The boats that never have an internet crisis are not the ones with the most expensive kit — they are the ones with two independent paths and a thirty-second way to switch between them. In practice that means a local SIM plus either Starlink or a second-carrier SIM, with both live, and everyone on board knowing which network to join when the first one stutters.

  • Keep the backup hotspot switched on and already paired to your laptop — switching networks mid-call should take one click, not five minutes of hunting for a password.
  • Know which connection you are actually on. People lose ten minutes to a dead call because their laptop silently held on to a marina Wi-Fi network with no route out.
  • Test both on the first morning, not the first time you need them.

Plan the week, not the hardware

The single biggest improvement to internet at sea is not equipment — it is scheduling. On our boats the day is built so the connection-critical work happens when the connection is strongest: the boat is at anchor and near shore in the morning, and the sailing happens in the afternoon. Calls go in the morning block. Long uploads go on while the boat is alongside or at a coastal anchorage. Anything that can be asynchronous stays asynchronous.

  • Put calls in the morning, at anchor. This is the most stable the connection will be all day.
  • Sail in the afternoon, when a dropout costs you nothing.
  • Queue large uploads and downloads for time alongside in a marina.
  • Tell your team which hours are solid, once, at the start of the week. Nobody minds a boundary they know about in advance.
  • Keep an offline-capable task for the crossings — the editing, the writing, the thinking work that does not need a network.

So can you actually work from a boat?

For most remote jobs, yes. The test we give people is simple: if your work survives a good café — a connection that is fast but not flawless, and that occasionally needs you to switch networks — it will survive a boat. If your job is back-to-back meetings from nine to six with no tolerance for a two-second glitch, a coastal week with a planned morning block will still work, but you should be honest with yourself about the afternoons.
